Front driveshaft dia. question......

Postby Hot Stuff » Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:13 pm

How small of a diameter do you think I could get away with for my front driveshaft? Im really tight between the shaft and trans pan, and am going to notch the pan for more clearance, but since I need to make new driveshaft's, I was wondering how small of a diameter I could safely get away with. Just looking for some suggestions. Thanks

My red bronco had a 1 1/4" piece of solid made into a driveshaft in that.

The 1.25" od shaft should work fine, just make sure to use at least .188" wall thickness (stock jeep is only .083" or .120"). If you have room, some of our driveshaft shops use I think it is a 1.375" with .312" wall thickness. Sometimes modifying the turbo 350 pan is really the only real option depending how much up travel the bumpstops will allow.

Jeesh, that had to weigh a ton. Let me re phrase the question, how small of a diameter tube do you think I could get away with? I'm running 1.75" tube now, And the length is about 27" center to center. The new length will be about 38.5" center to center.

Ya, I have to limit up travel. My biggest concern is tube diameter and wall thickness.

The 1.25" shaft should have no problem at the 38.5" kind of length.
