gearing

Postby fire and ice 2 » Thu Feb 12, 2015 10:16 am

i have a D class cj and i had a lot of rpm left at 300',so i started lowering the gears to compensate.currently have4.10/4.88 stagger,2.46 dana 20 with bronco gears and a t 150 tranny. fastest time before changes was a 5.39. last run was a 6.11. thinking about going back to a 2.0 transfer.how important is wheel speed. any ideas?

Are you only shifting one time ,like 2nd to 3rd with a 3 speed or 3rd to 4th with a 4 speed?

Mike is your top end gear ratio getting the RPM you need now ? By my calculation your takeoff gear now is too low at 21 to 1, are you shifting at only 30 or 40 ft out? Probably killed your 60 ft time , usually the short time is more important than achieving maximum RPM for agood E.T. Also your ratio change was wider at the shift than it was before. If you used to run 4.10 gears ,going to the 2.0 transfer with 4.88 will be very similar and would probably run close to what it did before. One more thing it seems like you have a lot of stagger for your tire height. are you sure thats right, can you push the jeep at all with the hubs locked in.

looks like that combo would yield a 17/1 number. what would be the preferred number? the stagger with the tires i am running gives about a 5% overdrive.front 91.06/4.10 103.62/4.88 rear.
