I know they sell aluminum hubs, and disc brake kits, for the D30s and D40s.... But you said you're trying to keep cost down and I can agree with that.

I had a straight axle in my Jeep and the knuckles were all ground down and lightened up a bunch. They were based on a D30. There's probably a lot of extra material you can mill off a D44 to save weight.

I'm not sure about the overall length you need, or the strength you need, but what about a Samurai front axle? I haven't messed with one before, but a lot of people have with the 4WD altereds. I think they already have aluminum hubs, disc brakes and 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern. May be a pretty simple swap. Not sure how heavy your truck is, but we're not beating on these things. I'd say it would last.

the truck is about 3400# now. the d44 hub rotor assembly prob are 25 # each. wondered about a D27 in the ft but don't know if the 11x2 drums would stop it without standing on the pedal. and if would take the shock load. don't know how much lighter they are . just looking for different ideas. thanks Mike.

Anything you buy to get weight off the 44 would be better spent on a 30. I assume you are wanting to stay leaf spring? I wouldnt waste my time on a 27.

i'll probably ditch the the leafs too. i'm sure the hubs/ rotors from a CJ aren't much lighter than whats on it now.
