Can't wait to get started

Postby Itsturpintime » Fri Mar 21, 2014 9:47 am

Fairly new to sand dragging. Now I am stepping it up to the big class out here in central cal. I have built a 525 bbc that I plan in running a 200 shot on so it should be right around 1000 hp. I am also building a tube chassis Nissan 4x4 truck should be around 2500-2800lb I am running a turbo 400 with a 5000 stall and I am trying to find out what gearing I should be running ? Thanks every one !

Most guys around use run in the 6.00:1 range without a transfer case, or in high range. Not sure what gear if you're reducing through a case

Sounds like a cool truck...but I would put a powerglide in it. It will be faster.

No doubt if you have the stuff already then use it. Will probably need to gear it pretty high to make that low 1st gear work.

Not a real good comparison, but im at 2500# with driver, a little 269" small block chevy, with a th350, with 5.38 gears in the rear, 4.88 up front. I launch at 6000 rpm in 1st, and shift into 2nd almost immediately after releasing the brake, then shift into 3rd at 8200 rpm and trap at 8200 rpm in 300'. All in high range. Seems the key to a 3 speed is getting it out of 1st gear ASAP. I have a custom planetary with a 2.23 first gear, 1.42 second, and 1:1 third. It's better than the stock 2.52, 1.52, 1:1. I like it. But if I ever redo the drivetrain setup, it'll be a glide. I only went with the th350 because I had it, and I run a tcase. No way to hook the glide to a tcase in my super short wheelbase.

 I really have a hard time believing this, a 269ci 2500 lbs that can pull a 5.38 gear and cross the finish line at 8200RPM even your second gear is 7.63 you would be lucky to shift out of second before crossing the finish line. You better check your transfer case shifter you have to be in LOW range not HIGH range as stated above.

Itsturpintime, Do you have a transbrake, if you do is it for low gear only? What rear tires and tire height do you plan on running ?
